Lenzing Creates Linen-Alternative Fabric with TENCEL™ Lyocell and Cotton

News 100

As a global leading producer of regenerated cellulose fibers, Lenzing Group has developed a fabric with appearance and texture similar to linen through innovative spinning, weaving and finishing technologies. Made from TENCEL™ Lyocell fiber and cotton fiber, this fabric features vivid colors, biodegradability and wrinkle resistance, offering improved performance compared to traditional linen fabrics. In addition, the yarn cost of this fabric is about 40% lower than that of 100% pure linen fabric. The TENCEL™ Lyocell fiber in the fabric is produced using a resource-efficient circular process and has obtained the EU Ecolabel certification.

Linen fabric is breathable and highly moisture-wicking, making it ideal for hot weather. However, 100% linen weaves wrinkle very easily. Through Lenzing’s innovative processing, TENCEL™ Lyocell and cotton fibers overcome this limitation: the new technology cleverly combines spinning, weaving and finishing processes to create a fabric that mimics linen’s look and texture, while feeling naturally dry, offering strong moisture control, high breathability and wrinkle resistance. Moreover, TENCEL™ Lyocell fiber enriches the fabric’s color palette, breaking the constraint of traditional linen’s muted tones. Beyond performance, its production costs are also reduced.

“We at Lenzing continuously explore and innovate across all dimensions to provide our value chain partners with high-performance, cost-competitive products that have a reduced environmental impact,” said Wei Peng Mo, Vice President of Global Technical Marketing & Development at Lenzing Group. “This new processing technology demonstrates our commitment to unlocking the potential of TENCEL™ Lyocell fiber as an ideal linen alternative. Fabrics made with it are suitable for everyday apparel and denim, and we look forward to further exploring its application in other textile products.”

Compared with traditional linen textile processes, Lenzing’s new process offers greater flexibility in spinning and is compatible with common spinning techniques. It provides an alternative solution for creating linen-like fabrics, opening up more design possibilities for fashion and home textiles.
